Mayfest 2023 Recap: A Celebration of Life and the Community
On May 7, 2023, the vibrant atmosphere of Mayfest 2023 filled the air at the Carson Civic Center in California, marking a remarkable day of celebration and appreciation. The goal for this year’s Mayfest is to give honor and recognize the unwavering commitment and efforts of caregivers to the community. Over 1000 people gathered together to celebrate this event, and it was supported with much enthusiasm even after a global pandemic.
“ We had a lower expectation of about 300-400 people participating but we were able to double that, triple that”, Mark Alipio the Community Outreach Director of Ca Care Association recalled. The attendees ranged from people of different age groups, and backgrounds, but most were families.
Mayfest 2023 entertained attendees with its plethora of indoor and outdoor activities such as the fashion show, dance performances, Carson marching band, music performance from the Wish Bus, car shows, magic shows, and many more. Even though one of the organizers mentioned that time was a challenge and there wasn’t enough to accomplish everything planned, the festival still provided a precious opportunity for attendees of all ages to enjoy the event and engage in meaningful conversations with organizations about the challenges faced by caregivers.
Due to the success of this year’s Mayfest, a targeted date is already set for next year that will be announced in the near future. Mark Alipio mentioned that they are anticipating workshops and educational programs, a deeper partnership with the Filipino Workers Center, and identifying more community partners that can help support the endeavor in the future.
Mayfest provided a way for organizations and people to collaborate and be united in making the lives of caregivers better. Even the singer SupaNova who performed at the event shared his heartwarming story of being a caregiver to his mom. Expect that the caregiver training by Ca Care Association will continue. The training provides additional support for individuals that have issues accessing caregiver training, and it will continue to improve.
“It's a Celebration, it really refers to all types of celebration… And then a celebration of life, just being able to be of service, being able to celebrate the community.” - Mark Alipio
