Be Prepared: Earthquake Training for Seniors

Earthquakes are one of the most terrifying natural disasters that humans face. In California, it is reported that the state experiences 10,000 earthquakes yearly. This is why it is best to plan, prepare, and partake in community initiatives that build capacity and capability in times of earthquakes.

Natural disasters are huge risk factors for everyone, especially our seniors and adults. Being prepared can make all the difference in staying safe and minimizing the impact of a disaster. That's why we're excited to announce an upcoming earthquake preparedness training event designed for older adults.

Why Seniors Should Be Involved and Taken Care Of

Earthquakes can pose significant risks to seniors due to several factors:

  • Physical limitations: Older adults may have reduced mobility, strength, or balance, making it more difficult to evacuate or respond to emergencies.

  • Chronic health conditions: Many seniors have pre-existing health conditions that earthquakes, such as heart disease, respiratory problems, or diabetes can exacerbate among the most terrifying natural disasters humans face.

  • Medication dependence: Reliance on medications can be challenging during disasters, as access to pharmacies or medical facilities may be limited.

  • Social isolation: Seniors living alone may have fewer support systems to rely on during emergencies.

How Training Can Help Adults in Times of Earthquakes

Seniors are particularly vulnerable to the effects of earthquakes. This training will equip its recipients with the knowledge and skills to stay safe and calm during natural disasters. This event can also reduce the anxiety and stress of individuals during earthquakes because they are aware of what to prepare and do before and during an earthquake. Most importantly, this training can provide a community and support network for every stakeholder and adult involved, ensuring that they have people to rely on.
